History
EPAX’s world-class reputation stems from its research, development and production of omega-3s. Its history dates back to 1838 when the JC Martens Company was founded in Norway, specializing in the refinement of cod liver products. Over time, the company eventually merged with others and, in early 2006, the EPAX brand de-merged from its then-parent company under a new name, EPAX AS, in order to have an even stronger focus on marine-based omega-3 development. In January 2007, Austevoll Seafood ASA acquired EPAX AS, with the new ownership making EPAX AS a vertically integrated company and further improving its commitment to quality control.
Quality Assurance
The EPAX production site in Aalesund, Norway is certified by the Norwegian Medicine Agencies for the production of API. The facility maintains an HACCP system, while production, control routines and overall quality assurance programs comply with cGMP standards. In addition, EPAX complies with the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 Voluntary Monograph and the European Pharmaceutical Pharmacopoeia.
As part of the Austevoll Seafood ASA group, EPAX AS benefits from a global, vertically integrated pelagic fishery specialist with operations in Peru, Chile and Norway and received certification from the Friend of the Sea (FOS) organization for its sustainable sourcing and production methods. Austevoll’s reputation as one of the biggest fish oil producers in the world enables EPAX to select the highest quality crude oil material for its products. This relationship also secures a continuous and traceable supply of oil, integrated quality assurance and control throughout all phases of the manufacturing process – from fishing boat to finished omega-3 ingredient.
Two-step Purification Process:
EPAX offers ultra-pure products of consistent quality. All of EPAX’s omega-3 oils are produced using a proprietary two-step purification process. The first step incorporates molecular distillation and produces marine omega-3s with much of the non-essential oils removed, resulting in a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. The second step involves a “stripping” process that removes virtually all of the impurities, contaminants and other unhealthy by-products found in fatty fish.
At EPAX, the definition of purity goes beyond measuring for pollutants only. It is currently the only company whose product specifications include strict parameters for trans fatty acids and harmful oxidative by-products such as oligomers — all factors that negatively impact human health.
These processes result in excellent purity levels and high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids that have lead EPAX to establish the strictest specification limits in the industry. The company’s goal is to remain ahead of regulatory developments and to set new purity and quality standards.
Omega-3 Overview
The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are increasingly accepted worldwide. The American Heart Association and the World Health Organization both support the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to diets, citing their importance in maintaining good health.
Mounting evidence of the efficiency of omega-3s in categories beyond cardiovascular and joint health, has led EPAX to widen its research and development to focus on specific omega-3 formulas that target individual health issues.
Main Products
The EPAX® brand indication-specific product line is available in a wide range of highly concentrated, ultra-pure products with varying EPA/DHA ratios and concentrations that address common health concerns including mind, joint, eye, cognitive, cardiovascular, healthy inflammation and pre- and postnatal health. Available as triglycerides and ethyl esters, the product range is extensively backed by clinical studies for documented effects and user safety.
